What actually goes wrong
Whether a port is a quick swap or a board repair depends on how it is built in. On most phones the charging port is on a flex or a small sub-board and simply unplugs. On consoles, controllers, handhelds, many laptops and the 2016–2020 MacBook Pros, the port is soldered straight to the main board, and replacing it means desoldering it under the microscope.
The difficult part is not fitting the new port; it is removing the old one without lifting the pads beneath it. A port that was torn out by a cable has often taken pads with it already. We rebuild those with fine jumper wires and new pads before the replacement goes on, so it is anchored properly rather than held by solder alone.
A port that has scorched points at a short behind it, so we check the circuit it feeds as well — the charging controller, the HDMI chip or the power-delivery chip. Fitting a new port onto a damaged circuit would only fail again.
