Apple and most insurers fix a board fault by swapping the whole phone. That is the end of the data on it, because an iPhone's storage is encrypted with keys held by its own processor and cannot be read on any other board. A board-level repair keeps the original board, so the photos, messages and Face ID or Touch ID pairing all survive.
A dead iPhone is usually a short on the main supply rail — a single failed capacitor is enough to stop it booting. We inject a low, current-limited voltage into the rail, find the component that warms up and replace it. Charging faults often trace to the charging and USB control chip, which a poor-quality cable or charger can damage; the port itself is a separate, simpler repair.
Some faults are well-known board failures on particular models: the iPhone 7 audio chip that greys out the speaker button, the no-service fault on some iPhone 7 boards, backlight circuit faults on LCD iPhones from the 6 to the 11 after a screen was fitted with the phone still powered. Each is a specific, repeatable repair rather than guesswork.
Since the iPhone X, the logic board is two boards stacked and bonded together. Many faults live between the layers, which have to be separated with controlled heat and rejoined perfectly afterwards. That is precision work, and it is why the price depends on what the diagnostic finds.
