Signs you need this repair

  • No lights, no fans, nothing when you press the power button
  • Charging light comes on but the battery never charges
  • DC jack is loose, wobbly or only works at an angle
  • USB-C charging stopped working after a new charger
  • Fans spin but the screen stays black
  • Stuck after a failed BIOS or firmware update
  • Liquid spilled on the keyboard

What actually goes wrong

Manufacturers quote a new motherboard for almost any board fault, and on a business laptop or a mobile workstation that quote can rival the price of the machine. The fault itself is usually one circuit: the charging controller, a shorted MOSFET on the input, a capacitor that has failed short on the processor supply, or a power jack that has torn its pads off the board.

Power jacks are the classic laptop board repair. A DC jack soldered to the motherboard takes every knock the cable does, and eventually the joints crack or the pads lift. We remove the old jack, rebuild any damaged pads and fit a new one. USB-C charging adds a power-delivery controller between the port and the charger circuit, and a poor-quality charger can take that controller out.

A laptop that powers on but never shows anything can be a corrupted firmware chip rather than a hardware failure — common after an update interrupted by a flat battery. We read the chip, rewrite it with a clean image for that exact board and refit it. That is a repair, not a guess, and it is quoted as one.

Many Windows 11 laptops encrypt their drive by default, with the key tied to the motherboard's security chip. Keep your recovery key from your Microsoft account to hand. Repairing the original board avoids needing it, which is one more reason to repair rather than swap.

Questions about this repair

Is a laptop motherboard worth repairing?

▼
On anything mid-range or above, nearly always — a component repair costs a fraction of a new board. On a cheap laptop the diagnostic will tell you honestly if it is not worth it. Board-level repairs are price on application — you get a fixed quote once we know what has failed, and nothing is done until you agree it.

Can you replace a laptop DC jack?

▼
Yes. Where the jack is soldered to the motherboard we desolder it, repair any lifted pads and fit a new one. Where it sits on a cable, it is a simpler part swap.
