Signs you need this repair
- Melted, browned or deformed 16-pin connector on the card
- Burning smell during gaming, then a black screen
- Cable plug fused into the card socket
- Card dead after a connector incident
What actually goes wrong
The 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, and the revised 12V-2x6, carries 450 watts or more through twelve small pins. If a plug is not pushed fully home, or the cable is bent hard right at the connector, a few pins end up carrying more than their share of the current. They heat, the plastic softens, and the connector melts.
The repair starts by removing the damaged connector and cleaning the pads underneath. Pads lifted by the heat are rebuilt. Then the circuit behind it gets checked — the power input, the current-sensing resistors and any fuses — because a melted connector can take something else with it, and a new connector on a damaged circuit would only fail again. The new connector goes on, and the card is tested under sustained load.
Replace the cable or adapter that melted, too: its pins will have been damaged in the same event. When refitting, push the plug in until it clicks and sits flush, and leave a straight run of cable before any bend.
