What actually goes wrong
A BGA chip — ball grid array — has no legs. It sits on hundreds of tiny solder balls underneath it, so none of its joints can be seen or touched once it is fitted. Years of heating and cooling can crack those joints, and the result is a fault that comes and goes with temperature.
Reballing is the proper fix for cracked joints. The chip is removed with controlled heat on a rework station, the old solder is cleaned off both the chip and the board, a fresh set of balls is laid down with a stencil, and the chip is reseated using a heat profile matched to the board. Where the chip itself has failed, it is replaced with a new one instead.
A "reflow" — heating the chip in place without removing it — can make a cracked-joint fault disappear for a while, and it is often sold as a repair. It rarely lasts, because nothing about the cracked joints has actually been renewed. A lasting repair means reballing or replacing the chip.
BGA work has real limits. Some chips are not available as spares, some boards do not survive the heat, and storage chips on modern phones and Macs cannot be moved because of encryption. We tell you whether it is viable on your board before any work starts.
