What actually goes wrong
Start with the cheapest possibility, because it is also the most common: the port is packed with lint. Pockets, bags and sofas fill a charging port with compressed fluff over months, and it stops the cable seating fully. If that is all it is, cleaning the port properly is a small job — and we would rather do that and charge you accordingly than replace a port that was never broken.
Where the port itself has failed, the cause is usually leverage. An iPad on charge gets picked up, moved and leaned on with the cable still in, and that force works the port on its solder joints until the connection becomes intermittent. That is the classic "only charges at an angle" symptom, and it is a board-level repair — the connector is soldered to the logic board and needs desoldering and reflowing under a microscope.
If the port looks and tests fine, the fault often lies further along the charge circuit, or with a battery that is refusing charge rather than a port failing to deliver it. The diagnostic separates those three before we quote, so you are not paying for a port replacement that was never going to fix the problem.
