Signs you need this repair
- Plugged in, but the battery percentage never rises
- Charges from one USB-C port and not the others
- MagSafe light does not come on
- Charges only when the Mac is shut down
- Battery shows "Not Charging" with a known-good charger
- Stopped charging after a cheap charger or a spill
What actually goes wrong
Rule out the easy things first: a different Apple charger and cable, a different port, and on Intel Macs an SMC reset. If the MacBook still will not charge, the fault is inside — the port, the battery, or the charging circuit on the logic board — and each needs a different repair.
A USB-C meter between the charger and the Mac tells us a lot quickly. A Mac that only ever draws 5V is not negotiating power with the charger, which points at the USB-C controller circuit. A Mac that negotiates the full voltage but takes almost no current points further in, at the charging circuit or the battery.
On the 2016–2020 Intel MacBook Pros and Airs, each USB-C port has its own controller chip on the logic board, and a faulty charger or liquid can damage one — which is why a Mac sometimes charges from one side only. On the 14- and 16-inch Apple silicon models, MagSafe and the ports sit on separate boards, so a damaged port is usually a module swap rather than micro soldering.
If it turns out the battery itself has failed, that is a battery replacement rather than a board repair, and we will tell you so. Either way, the diagnostic separates the three before you pay for anything.
