Gaming laptops push far more power through their boards than ordinary laptops: a high-end laptop GPU alone can draw 150 watts or more. That current runs through power stages and MOSFETs packed beside the GPU and processor, and when one fails it usually fails short. The laptop then trips its protection and appears completely dead, even though everything else on the board is fine.
Heat is the other enemy. Years of thermal cycling crack solder joints, dust-clogged fans push temperatures higher, and an intermittent fault that only appears under load is often a joint that opens up as the board warms. We test under load on the bench, not just at idle, so the fault is found rather than missed.
Video and charging ports take a battering on machines that travel. HDMI, USB-C and Thunderbolt ports are soldered to the board on most gaming laptops, as are many barrel jacks. A port that has torn its pads is rebuilt rather than written off.
Where the GPU or processor itself has failed, the job becomes BGA work — the chip is removed and replaced or reballed. That is a specialist repair with real limits, and on some models it is not economical. The diagnostic tells you which side of that line your laptop sits, before you spend anything on it.
