On most of these handhelds the USB-C port is soldered directly to the main board, and it is also the only way in for power. A port worn by a dock, or torn by a cable caught mid-game, stops the device charging. We replace the port and rebuild any pads it pulled with it.
Charging faults that survive a new port point at the power-delivery and charging circuits behind it. These handhelds pull a lot of power through a small board, and a poor charger or dock can damage those parts. They are diagnosed and replaced at component level.
The ROG Ally is known for its microSD reader failing, often linked to heat from the charger beside it. Card reader faults on any handheld are worth diagnosing rather than living with, because the cause can be a component on its way out rather than the reader itself.
