MacBook Won’t Turn On

A MacBook that will not turn on is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the range underneath it is wide — a failed charger, a dead battery, a damaged charge circuit, a shorted power rail on the board, or a display fault on a machine that is actually running perfectly well. Guessing is expensive, which is why this one always starts with a diagnostic rather than a quote.

A couple of things are worth trying before it comes to us, because they cost nothing. On Intel MacBooks, an SMC reset resolves a surprising share of no-power cases. On Apple Silicon there is no SMC to reset — holding the power button for ten seconds and releasing achieves the equivalent. If the fan spins and the keyboard backlight comes on but the screen stays dark, shine a torch at the screen at an angle: if you can see a faint image, the machine is fine and the fault is the backlight, which is a much smaller job.

When it genuinely is the board, this is microscope work. Power rails get traced to find where the voltage stops, and the failure is usually a specific component — a shorted capacitor, a failed power management IC, corrosion from a spill months ago — rather than the whole board. Replacing a logic board outright is the expensive answer that most places give because they cannot do the component-level repair; we do it here, and it is very often a fraction of the price.

One thing to raise early if your files matter. On T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks the SSD is soldered to the logic board and tied to it cryptographically, so the drive cannot simply be moved to another machine. If the board is failing, the window to recover data is while it can still be brought up — which is a good reason not to leave a dead MacBook in a drawer for six months.
