What actually goes wrong
Drift on the Steam Deck comes from the same place it does on every modern controller: the potentiometers inside the thumbstick module wear, and the neutral position stops reading as neutral. Recalibrating in software masks it for a while, but once it has started, the fix is a new module.
Before replacing anything we check whether it is genuinely drift or a deadzone setting, because the Deck lets per-game configurations override the system deadzone and we would rather not charge you for a repair you do not need.
Bumpers and triggers are a separate common failure — they take the most physical abuse on the device and the microswitches wear out well before anything else on the board. Both are replaceable independently of the sticks.
