What actually goes wrong
A Steam Deck pulls air through the whole shell, and because it is usually held rather than sat on a desk, it takes in dust, hair and pocket lint faster than a laptop does. That builds up on the heatsink fins until the fan has to work permanently harder for less cooling — which you hear before you feel it.
The thermal paste is the other half. Valve applied it well, but paste dries out over years of heat cycling, and a Deck that throttles after ten minutes of play is usually telling you the paste has gone rather than that the chip is failing. Fresh paste and new thermal pads typically drop sustained temperatures noticeably and let the fan settle down.
We also check the fan itself while it is open. Early Decks shipped with two different fan suppliers and one of them was markedly louder; if yours is the noisy one and it has started grinding, replacing it is worth doing while the unit is already apart.
