What actually goes wrong
The Steam Deck ships with a 40Wh battery that lives directly behind the back shell. It is a high-drain device — running a handheld PC at full tilt cycles the cell far harder than a phone — so noticeably reduced runtime after two or three years of regular play is normal wear rather than a defect.
A swollen battery is the one to act on immediately. Because the cell sits flat against the back shell, swelling shows up as a case that no longer sits flush, trackpads that feel proud, or a back plate that flexes. Stop charging it, stop playing, and send it in — a swollen lithium cell is a fire risk and it will eventually push hard enough to crack the shell or the screen.
We fit a replacement cell, re-seat the thermal and adhesive layers properly, and check the charge circuit at the same time, because a battery that has been running hot is often accompanied by a USB-C port that has taken a knock.
