What actually goes wrong
The Steam Deck shell takes the impact in a drop, which is by design — better the housing than the board. What usually goes is one of the internal screw posts, and once a post has snapped the back never sits flush again, which lets in more dust and puts pressure on the trackpads.
A shell replacement means moving every internal component across to a new housing: board, battery, fan, panel, trackpads, sticks and triggers. It is a full teardown and rebuild rather than a swap, so it takes longer than most repairs on this list, and we quote it accordingly.
This is also the repair we see most after a self-repair goes wrong — stripped posts, torn ribbon cables, missing screws. There is no judgement in that, the Deck is a repairable device and having a go is reasonable. Send it in with whatever parts you have and we will tell you honestly what it needs.
