What actually goes wrong
The OLED Steam Deck is not a cosmetic refresh — Valve changed the display, the battery, the Wi-Fi module, the cooling and parts of the board layout. LCD parts do not fit it. If you have been quoted using LCD pricing, that quote is for a different machine.
The 7.4-inch HDR OLED panel is larger than the LCD it replaced while sitting in the same shell, so the assembly and the mounting differ. We source OLED-specific panels and confirm the revision before ordering anything, which is why the diagnostic comes first and the quote comes after.
On the upside, the OLED model carries a 50Wh battery against the LCD’s 40Wh and runs cooler, so it tends to arrive with impact damage rather than wear. Burn-in is rare in normal use, but static HUD elements over hundreds of hours can leave a mark, and we will tell you honestly whether what you are seeing is burn-in or a panel fault.
