What actually goes wrong
The Titan, Raider and Vector run high-power GPUs and processors, and the power stages that feed them work hard. A shorted stage trips the laptop's protection and it looks completely dead, although the rest of the board is usually fine. Replacing the failed parts costs a fraction of a new board.
An MSI that powers on — fans spinning, keyboard lit — but never shows a picture has a different problem: it is not getting through its startup checks. Memory, a corrupted BIOS (often after an interrupted update) or a fault around the processor are the usual causes. A corrupted BIOS chip is reprogrammed directly, without replacing the board.
