Signs you need this repair
- Only stable with Cooler Boost switched on
- Fans at full speed even on the desktop
- Frame rate drops after a few minutes of gaming
- Shuts down during games
- Grinding or rattling fan noise
What actually goes wrong
MSI gaming laptops run their processors and GPUs hard, and the cooling relies on clean heatsink fins and fresh thermal compound to keep up. Dust packs the fins, compound dries out and pads harden, and the laptop starts throttling, running its fans flat out or shutting down in games.
Cooler Boost — the fan button on many MSIs, or the setting in MSI Center — runs the fans at full speed. It helps for a while on a clogged laptop, but it cannot move heat the heatsink can no longer shed. If your MSI only stays stable with Cooler Boost on, it needs cleaning.
The job is a full strip-down: fans and heatsinks cleaned directly, old compound removed from the processor and GPU, fresh compound and correctly sized pads fitted, and worn fans replaced. Compressed air through the vents does not reach the fins, and can push dust further in.
