Signs you need this repair

  • Plugged in but the battery never charges
  • Stops at 60% or 80% and goes no higher
  • Charging cuts in and out when the cable moves
  • Battery drains in games even on the charger
  • Charger is hot, buzzing or has a damaged cable

What actually goes wrong

Check Battery Master in MSI Center first. It can hold the charge at 60% or 80% to slow wear — sensible for a laptop that lives on its charger, but it looks exactly like a fault.

Next come the cheap causes: the charger and its cable, then the power port. MSI's larger models draw a lot from their chargers, so a worn barrel connector or a damaged cable shows up as charging that cuts in and out, or a laptop that drains while gaming on the charger.

If the charger and port are fine and it still will not charge, the fault is in the charging circuit on the board or in the battery itself, and we test both before quoting. Use the charger your model shipped with — a lower-wattage one may run the laptop at idle but will not keep up in games.
