What actually goes wrong
Start with the charger, because on this model it is genuinely the most likely answer. The MacBook Neo ships with a USB-C cable and no power adapter, so a great many of them are being charged from whatever was already in the house. It needs a USB-C power source rated 20W or higher. A 5W phone charger from an older iPhone will either charge it imperceptibly slowly or appear to do nothing at all while the machine is awake. Before paying anyone to look at the port, try a laptop-grade charger.
The second thing worth knowing is that the two ports are not identical. Apple wired the left-hand port as USB 3 and the right-hand port as USB 2. Both charge, but they do not move data at the same speed — so an external drive that feels slow on one side and fine on the other is the machine working as designed, not a fault. It catches people out constantly.
If a decent charger still will not do it, the real candidates are the port itself, the charging circuit on the board, or the battery. USB-C ports fail mechanically — they take the strain of every cable that has ever been yanked out sideways, and pocket lint compacts into them until the connector cannot seat. On the Neo the ports are modular and come out individually, so a worn port is a genuinely economical repair rather than a board-level job.
What we will not do is replace a port without establishing that the port is the fault. A charging failure can just as easily be the battery or the board, and swapping the wrong part is how people end up paying twice.
