Signs you need this repair

  • Nowhere near the 16 hours Apple quoted, on a machine barely a year old
  • Shuts down suddenly at 20–30% charge
  • "Service Recommended" in the battery menu
  • Trackpad sitting proud or the case rocking on a flat desk
  • Runs fine on the charger, dies almost immediately off it

What actually goes wrong

This is the repair that makes the MacBook Neo unusual. On every other modern MacBook the battery cells are glued into the top case, which means solvent, patience, and on some models replacing the whole top case assembly when a cell tears. Apple mounted the Neo's battery with 18 screws and no adhesive at all. iFixit called it the most accessible battery in a Mac since 2012. In practice that means far less labour, no glue-related collateral damage, and a materially lower quote than the same job on an Air or a Pro.

There is no parts pairing on this machine either, so a replacement battery reports its health normally and the machine does not display the service warnings that an independent battery swap can trigger on some other recent Apple hardware.

A swollen battery is the one to act on straight away rather than living with. Because the cells sit flat under the top case, swelling shows up as a trackpad that has started to sit proud of the surface, a case that rocks on a flat desk, or a lid that no longer closes flush. Stop charging it and bring it in — a swollen lithium cell will eventually push hard enough to damage the trackpad or crack the screen, and it is a fire risk in the meantime.

Worth knowing before you book: a Neo that is only months old and already showing poor runtime usually does not need a battery. Far more often it is a background process or a display setting, and we would rather find that in the diagnostic than sell you a cell you do not need.
