What actually goes wrong
Alienware boards carry some of the most powerful mobile GPUs made, and the power stages feeding them handle a lot of current. When one fails it usually fails short: the laptop trips its protection and looks completely dead, even though the GPU, the processor and the rest of the board are fine. Replacing the failed components costs a fraction of a new motherboard.
Dell builds a self-test into Alienwares. If the board finds a fault at startup, it blinks the power or battery light in a pattern of amber then white, and the count narrows down what failed. Tell us the pattern when you book. It is a starting point — we still measure the board before naming a part.
On most Alienwares the processor and GPU are soldered to the board, so a failed chip means BGA work, which has real limits and is not always economical. The diagnostic tells you which side of that line your laptop sits before you spend anything. Our specialist board-level technician does this work in our Newcastle workshop, and it is price on application: you get a fixed quote once we know what has failed.
