Signs you need this repair

  • Plugged in, but the battery never charges
  • A startup warning that the AC adapter type cannot be determined
  • Runs slowly on the charger, as if on battery
  • Charges only with the plug held at an angle
  • Battery drains during games even on the charger

What actually goes wrong

Dell's barrel chargers have a thin centre pin that tells the laptop which charger is connected and how much power it can supply. If that pin, the cable or the matching circuit on the board fails, the Alienware cannot identify the charger: it warns at startup, refuses to charge, or charges while holding the processor and GPU back. The laptop still runs, which is why this fault is so often blamed on the battery.

We work through the cheap causes first: the charger and its cable, then the power port, which on many models is a separate part from the motherboard, and only then the charging circuit on the board itself.

Use the wattage your model shipped with. A lower-rated Dell charger may be recognised, but it will not keep up under load, so the battery drains while you game.
