Signs you need this repair
- Not enough storage to install a new game
- Constantly deleting games to make room
- Long waits re-downloading games you play regularly
- Updates failing because the console is full
What actually goes wrong
Every PS5 has an expansion slot for an M.2 SSD, and a fitted drive behaves like the console's own storage: PS5 games install and play straight from it. The launch PS5 has around 667GB usable out of the box, and big modern games — with big releases like GTA 6 on the way — eat that quickly.
The drive has to be a PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD fast enough for the console, and it needs a heatsink; the PS5 checks the drive speed when it formats it. We fit the drive and heatsink, format it in the console, and confirm the speed test passes before handing it back.
An external USB drive is an alternative for storing PS5 games you are not playing and for running PS4 games, but PS5 games have to be moved back to internal or M.2 storage to play. An M.2 upgrade avoids that shuffle altogether.
