What actually goes wrong
Switch batteries wear like any lithium battery, and the early consoles are now old enough that a lot of them are well past their best. A worn battery shows as short play time and shutdowns that arrive before the gauge reaches zero.
A battery that is pushing the screen up or the back out is swollen and should not be charged or used. We replace it, check the screen and the board it was pressing against, and test the new battery through a full charge.
If the Switch will not charge at all, the battery may not be the problem — the charging chips behind the USB-C port fail more often, and a new battery would not fix them. We test before replacing anything.
