- Fan much louder than it used to be
- Console shuts down or restarts during long sessions
- Exhaust air noticeably hot
- Visible dust in the vents, or the console stands on carpet
- Never been cleaned and is more than two years old
What actually goes wrong
The Xbox Series X pulls air in through the base and exhausts it out of the top, which is a genuinely good design — right up until the console is stood on a carpet or in a closed cabinet. Then it draws dust and fibres straight into the heatsink, and the fins clog into a mat the fan cannot shift. The Series S has far less thermal headroom to begin with, so it starts complaining sooner.
Compressed air through the vents does not fix this and often makes it worse, because it drives the dust deeper into the heatsink and across the board. A proper clean is a strip-down: heatsink and fan cleaned directly, dust traps cleared, then reassembled correctly.
The thermal compound is the other half of the job on any console more than a few years old. Paste dries out with heat cycling, and an Xbox that throttles or shuts down under load is usually telling you the interface has degraded rather than that the chip is failing. Fresh compound and a clean heatsink typically drop sustained temperatures noticeably and let the fan settle back down.
To be clear about what this is: the Xbox uses conventional thermal compound, not the liquid metal Sony put in the PS5. This is the Xbox equivalent of that service, done with the correct material for the machine.
