Signs you need this repair

  • Trackpad sits higher than it should, or is hard to click
  • The Blade rocks on a flat desk
  • A gap opening between the base and the body
  • Battery drains in well under an hour
  • Shuts down at a percentage that is not zero

What actually goes wrong

Battery swelling is the best-known Razer Blade problem. Lithium cells give off gas as they age, especially when they are held at full charge and kept warm — which describes a gaming laptop left plugged in on a desk. The cells puff up, and in a Blade's tight aluminium chassis there is nowhere for them to go except up into the trackpad or down against the base.

Stop using a swollen Blade and stop charging it. Do not press the trackpad down or try to flatten the case. The battery needs to come out carefully, without bending or puncturing it, and we check the trackpad, the chassis and the board around the battery once it is out, because swelling can crack or bend what it pushes against.

After the replacement, the most useful thing you can do is stop the new battery sitting at 100% all day. Razer Synapse has a battery health optimiser that holds the charge lower when the Blade lives on its charger; turning it on slows the same thing happening again.
