What actually goes wrong
On every Retina MacBook the panel, the glass and the lid assembly are bonded into one unit. That is why a cracked Retina screen is a display assembly replacement rather than a glass swap — there is no glass to lift off. Pre-Retina MacBooks (roughly 2012 and earlier) do separate, and on those we can sometimes replace the glass alone for a fraction of the cost, so it is always worth us confirming which one you have before quoting.
Vertical lines and dark bands are usually a different fault from a crack, and worth naming properly. On the 2016–2017 MacBook Pro they are often "flexgate" — the backlight ribbon wears through where it folds over the board each time the lid opens. It starts as a "stage light" effect along the bottom edge, then the backlight fails entirely. On the affected models the ribbon is short by design, and once it has torn, the display assembly is the fix.
A display that flickers or dies at particular hinge angles is telling you the fault is in the cable rather than the panel. That is good news and a cheaper repair, but only if it is diagnosed before someone replaces a perfectly good screen.
