MacBook Storage & RAM Upgrades

The honest starting point: on most MacBooks sold in the last decade, the RAM cannot be upgraded. From the Retina models onwards Apple soldered the memory to the logic board, and on Apple Silicon machines it is part of the processor package itself. No workshop can change that — anyone who tells you otherwise is about to take your money for something else. Upgradeable RAM effectively means the non-Retina MacBook Pro and older MacBook lines, and no MacBook Air has ever had it.

Storage is the more useful conversation, and it applies to far more machines. The 2012–2015 MacBook Air and Pro use a proprietary blade SSD that we can replace with a much larger, much faster NVMe drive using the correct adapter — that upgrade turns a sluggish machine into a genuinely quick one for a fraction of a replacement. The 2012 non-Retina Pro is the best case of the lot: it takes both RAM and a standard 2.5-inch SSD, and it is still a perfectly usable machine once it has them.

On T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks the SSD is soldered too, so there is no upgrade path. What we can do there is different but often more valuable: work out whether the machine is actually short of memory or short of disk, clear what is genuinely eating the space, and tell you honestly whether an upgrade elsewhere would help or whether your money is better kept for the next machine.
