What actually goes wrong
Bumpers are the Xbox-specific weak point. The microswitch beneath each one is rated for far fewer presses than the amount of use a shoulder button actually gets, so it wears out well before the sticks on a pad used mainly for shooters. It gives a very recognisable symptom — a bumper that still clicks properly under the thumb but does nothing in game, because the click you feel is the plastic, not the switch.
Drift is the same worn-potentiometer story as every other controller, and the same fix: a replacement thumbstick module. Worth asking about Hall effect modules here, which use magnets instead of contacts and so have nothing to wear out — they cost more, and on a pad that has already drifted once they are usually the better money.
The Elite Series 2 deserves its own note, because it costs enough that people replace it when they should repair it. Paddles, the paddle latches and the trigger locks are all serviceable, and so are the sticks. If yours has one dead paddle, that is a repair, not a write-off.
