Signs you need this repair
- Character or camera moves with no thumb on the stick
- Adaptive trigger stuck, loose or no longer resisting
- Face button or D-pad needs a hard press to register
- Only charges at an angle, or not at all
- Pad disconnects mid-game and reconnects on its own
What actually goes wrong
Drift on a DualSense is the same mechanical wear as on every other modern controller: the potentiometers in the thumbstick module lose their neutral reading, and the console starts acting on input nobody gave it. Recalibrating masks it briefly. Once it has started, the module is the fix — and it is a module, not a controller, which is why replacing the whole pad is rarely the sensible move.
The adaptive triggers are the DualSense-specific failure and the one to mention when you book. They contain a small gearbox and motor assembly that can jam or strip, so the trigger goes slack, stays stiff, or stops giving resistance in games that use it. That is a separate part from the trigger switch itself, and diagnosing which of the two has gone is the difference between a small repair and the wrong repair.
Charging faults are usually the USB-C port rather than the battery. The port is soldered to the board and sits where the cable gets levered when the pad is set down while charging, so it works loose over time — the classic "only charges if I hold the cable just so". That is board-level work, done here under a microscope rather than sent away.
