What actually goes wrong

Most recent ROG laptops ship with liquid metal on the processor and pads or paste on the GPU and other chips. Over the years dust packs the heatsink fins, pads harden, and the liquid metal can thin out or creep away from the chip, so temperatures climb and the laptop throttles.

Servicing liquid metal is not the same as a repaste. The old metal has to come off completely, the components around the chip need protecting so a stray drop cannot short them, and the right amount has to go back on. Wiping it off and putting ordinary paste on instead usually leaves an ROG hotter than it was new.

The rest is a full strip-down: fans and heatsinks cleaned directly, hardened pads replaced and worn fans swapped. Afterwards, check the operating mode in Armoury Crate — Silent mode caps the fans on purpose.
