What actually goes wrong
iPhone batteries are consumables. Apple rates them to hold about 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles, which most people reach somewhere between eighteen months and three years. You can check yours in Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging — under 80% and iOS starts throttling performance to prevent sudden shutdowns, which is why an older iPhone often feels slow rather than short of charge.
The part worth understanding before you shop on price: iOS pairs the battery to the phone, and a replacement fitted without transferring that pairing will show "Unknown Part" and stop reporting battery health entirely. The cell still works, but you lose all visibility of it. We transfer the battery management data across so health reporting keeps working — and where a particular model genuinely will not allow it, we tell you that before we start rather than after.
A swollen battery is the one not to put off. It shows as a screen lifting at one edge, a back panel bulging, or a phone that no longer sits flat. Stop charging it and bring it in — the cell is under pressure against the display, and left long enough it will crack the screen from the inside and turn a battery job into a battery and screen job.
