What actually goes wrong
iPad batteries are large, and because tablets tend to be used in long sessions and left on charge overnight, they age steadily rather than dramatically. Most iPads reach the point of needing a cell somewhere past the four or five year mark — which, given how long iPads stay useful, is why battery replacement is so often what stands between a working tablet and a drawer.
A swollen iPad battery deserves urgency. The cells sit directly beneath the display, so swelling shows up as a screen lifting at one edge or a device that rocks when pressed. Stop charging it — a swollen cell under a laminated display will eventually crack it, turning a battery repair into a battery and screen repair, and a punctured lithium cell in a device that size is a genuine fire risk.
This is a repair that rewards patience and punishes force. The battery is bonded into the chassis with heavy adhesive, and it sits alongside ribbon cables that are easy to sever. It has to be released with the correct solvent, not levered out. We reseal the device properly afterwards so it goes back together as it should.
