If a desktop Mac has become painfully slow, the cause is usually the drive rather than the machine. Apple shipped mechanical hard drives and Fusion Drives in iMacs long after laptops had moved to SSDs, and a mechanical drive that has been spinning for six or eight years is both slow and close to the end of its life. Fitting an SSD in its place is the single biggest improvement available to any Mac, and it routinely takes a machine people were about to replace and makes it quick again.

Fusion Drives deserve a specific warning. They pair a small SSD with a large mechanical drive and present the two to macOS as a single volume — which means when the mechanical half degrades, the whole volume becomes unreliable, and because your data is striped across both halves, recovering it afterwards is considerably harder than from a plain failing drive. Beachballing, clicking, or a long grey boot screen on a Fusion Drive iMac is a warning worth acting on rather than living with.

Memory is a better story on desktop Macs than on laptops. The 27-inch Intel iMac has a memory door on the back and takes far more RAM than most people ever fitted, which makes it a genuinely cheap upgrade. The 21.5-inch needs a full teardown to reach its memory, and every Apple Silicon Mac — the 24-inch iMac, M-series mini, Mac Studio — has memory in the processor package where nobody can change it.
