What actually goes wrong
How an iMac screen comes off depends on its age, and the difference matters. iMacs up to 2011 hold the front glass on with magnets — it lifts away with suction cups, which makes cleaning dust from behind it a small job. From 2012 onwards Apple bonded the display to the chassis with adhesive strips, so the panel has to be cut free with a purpose-made tool and resealed with fresh adhesive on reassembly.
That bonding is why iMac screen work is worth having done properly. The two things that go wrong when it is rushed are dust trapped behind the glass — permanently visible on a bright background, and infuriating on a 27-inch display — and adhesive that has not been fully replaced, leaving the panel sitting proud or lifting at a corner months later. We work in a way that keeps dust out and reseal with new strips rather than trying to reuse what was there.
Not every display fault is the panel, and it is worth separating them before spending. Dark patches at the edges usually mean backlight LEDs or their driver rather than the panel itself; a display that is completely black while the machine chimes and boots may be a backlight fuse on the board, which is a small board-level repair rather than a screen. The diagnostic tells us which, so you are quoted for the fault you actually have.
