On any iMac with a hard drive or a Fusion Drive, the drive is very often the entire problem — and fitting an SSD makes a five- or eight-year-old iMac feel like a new machine for a fraction of the price of one. We check the drive health, memory and thermals during the free diagnostic and tell you honestly whether the machine is worth the money.

A Fusion Drive pairs a small SSD with a large mechanical hard drive and presents them to macOS as one volume. The problem is that it is one volume — when the mechanical half starts failing, the whole thing becomes unreliable, and because the data is spread across both, recovery is harder than with a plain drive. If yours is beachballing, clicking or slow to boot, get it looked at rather than waiting.

On the 27-inch Intel iMac, yes, easily — there is a memory door on the back and it takes up to 64GB or 128GB depending on the year. On the 21.5-inch Intel iMac the memory is reachable but only through a full teardown, so it is a bigger job. On any Apple Silicon Mac — the 24-inch iMac, M-series mini, Mac Studio — memory is part of the processor package and cannot be changed by anyone.

Yes. On every iMac from 2012 onwards the display is bonded to the chassis with adhesive strips rather than held by magnets, so it has to be cut out and resealed properly with fresh adhesive. Done badly it leaves dust behind the glass or a panel that does not sit flush, which is why it is worth having done rather than attempted.

Usually it is dust rather than failure. Desktop Macs draw air through the chassis for years and the fans end up working permanently harder against clogged vents and heatsinks. A strip-down clean and fresh thermal compound almost always quietens them and drops running temperatures — and heat is what kills the components around it over time.

A Mac mini or Mac Studio, easily — they are small and post well, and our mail-in service is free both ways and covers the whole UK. An iMac is a different matter: they are large, awkward and vulnerable in transit, so for those we would rather you brought it in to Newcastle, and we can talk through the options if you cannot.
