The Shuffle 2nd gen uses flash memory, so it has none of the mechanical failures that affect hard-drive iPods — no clicking, no skipping when it is knocked. If yours will not hold a sync or is not recognised, that is a connector, cable or software fault rather than a dying drive, and the diagnostic tells us which.
Shuffle 2nd gen buttons
The physical buttons on the Shuffle 2nd gen wear out with use and collect pocket lint underneath. We clean or replace the button assembly so play, skip and volume respond first time.
Shuffle 2nd gen charging & audio
If your Shuffle 2nd gen will not charge or is not seen by a computer, the 3.5mm dock connector is the usual cause — the contacts corrode and the pins wear. Because the Shuffle charges and takes its controls through the same socket, one worn port causes both problems at once.

Can you replace the battery in an iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation?

Yes — it is the repair we do most on this generation. The original cell is around 20 years old, and lithium batteries degrade whether or not the iPod has been used, so a device stored in a drawer will still have a flat or swollen battery. We replace it and re-seal the case. If the battery has swollen and is pressing on the housing or the screen, stop using it and bring it in — a swollen cell is a fire risk.
